Tangles
"Tangles" is a 24" x 48" abstract painting, done in acrylics on stretched canvas, that represents multiple aspects of Alzheimer's disease. The horizontal band represents life's timeline. The left side of the painting is bright and colorful, representing the sharp mental stage of life. These colors dull as the timeline moves to the right, representing the loss of affect and dulling of mental cognition. The large neuron is positioned in the latter part of that life line, when Alzheimer's typically sets in, but is not positioned at the edge of the canvas, representing that life goes on well after the onset of this disease. The left side of the large neuron is shown in its healthy stage, while the right side shows the development of the tangles which are observed within the neurons of people diagnosed with Alzheimer's.
